The Summer vs. Winter Laser Debate: When Is the Ideal Time to Start?

One of the most common questions we hear at English Rose Beauty House is:

"When is the best time of year to start laser hair removal?"

There is a widespread belief that laser is strictly a winter-only treatment, or conversely, that you should wait until right before a summer holiday to book your sessions.

The truth lies in understanding how light energy interacts with tanned skin, and how your body’s natural hair growth cycles work over time.

Whether you want smooth legs for summer, a hassle-free bikini line year-round, or to manage stubborn facial hair, here is the honest science behind timing your treatments for maximum safety and the best possible results.

Why Autumn and Winter Are the "Golden Months" for Laser

While medical laser treatments can be performed safely year-round with the right technology, starting your journey in autumn or winter gives you a major natural advantage.

Here is why the cooler months are ideal:

1. Untanned Skin Allows for Optimal Power and Safety

Laser hair removal works through a principle called selective photothermolysis. The laser uses pigment (melanin) in the hair shaft as a conduit to deliver heat down to the root.

When your skin has a natural or active sun tan, the melanin levels in your skin surface increase. If you get treated while tanned, surface skin pigment can compete with the hair root for that light energy.

During autumn and winter, when your skin naturally fades back to its baseline tone, there is minimal surface melanin. This allows us to safely use higher, more effective energy settings—delivering maximum heat directly to the hair root while keeping your skin surface completely cool and protected.

2. The Maths of Growth Cycles (The 6-Month Timeline)

Laser light can only disable hair follicles that are currently in their active growth phase (Anagen). Because only a portion of your hair is active at any given time, sessions must be spaced 6 to 8 weeks apart to catch every follicle as it enters its growth cycle.

A full course typically requires 6 to 8 sessions. If you start in October or November:

  • Session 1: October

  • Session 2: December

  • Session 3: January

  • Session 4: March

  • Session 5: April

  • Session 6: June

By the time warm weather arrives and you pull out your summer wardrobe, your treatment course is complete. You step into summer with smooth, calm skin without having spent a single minute shaving or dealing with razor rash.

Can You Do Laser in Spring or Summer?

Yes, absolutely—with the right protocol.

You do not have to put your life on hold or wait until winter if you want to start during warmer months, especially for areas that aren't exposed to direct sunlight (such as underarms or facial zones protected by daily SPF).

However, summer laser requires two strict rules:

  1. The 2-Week Sun Rule: You must avoid direct sun exposure, sunbeds, and fake tan on the treatment area for at least 2 weeks before and 2 weeks after every session.

  2. Daily SPF 50 Protection: Exposed areas like the face or lower arms must be protected with a high-quality, broad-spectrum sunscreen every single day to keep surface skin calm and baseline-pigmented.

The Cutera Excel HR Advantage: Safe Year-Round Protection

Not all laser systems handle different skin tones and subtle summer tans equally.

At English Rose, our medical-grade Cutera Excel HR system features two distinct wavelengths that allow us to treat skin safely in any season:

  • The Alexandrite (755nm) Wavelength: Used during winter or on naturally fair, untanned skin for rapid, high-efficiency results on fine or stubborn hair.

  • The Nd:YAG (1064nm) Wavelength: Engineered specifically for deeper skin tones and lightly tanned skin. Its deeper penetration bypasses surface skin pigment entirely, targeting deep hair roots safely without risking heat damage or pigmentation changes.

Combined with built-in Sapphire contact cooling—which chills your skin to a cool 4°C throughout every pulse—your skin barrier remains protected, comfortable, and safe no matter the season.

The Verdict: Don't Wait Until Summer to Think About Summer

If your goal is to be completely free from daily shaving, waxing appointments, and razor bumps by summer, the best time to start is right now.

Starting early gives your skin the gift of time—allowing you to complete your sessions naturally, heal your skin barrier, and enjoy long-lasting, smooth skin when you want it most.
